Located
in the hills of the Macizo Colombiano and bathed by the waters of Magdalena,
Sombrerillos and Naranjos rivers, it is the municipality of San Agustín
declared in 1995 Historical and Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity
by the UNESCO, port of entry to the famous Archaeologic Park that
keeps the testimony of a practically unknown culture, but spiritually
very deep.
This is one of the archaeologic sites more important of the continent.
The area was inhabited by a mysterious Pre-Columbian civilization that
let in the monumental statues and tombs was their most valuable treasure.
The site was a ceremonial center where the inhabitants buried to your
dead and put the statues to the side of the tombs, in which those remote
towns expressed their religious thought, intimately linked to daily activities.
The archaeological vestiges consist on several hundreds of stone statues,
some of big dimensions. The cult to the deads, the exaltation of their
deities and of their ancestors, it seems that it was the main concern
of the tribes that there were living and they chose the landscape of Macizo
Colombiano as center of their activities.
In the outsides from San Agustín, is found the Archaeologic Park, where
is concentrated most of the Monumental Sculpture , surrounded by several
so important equidistant sites as the Alto de los Ídolos, the Alto de
las Piedras, La Fuente y Alto Lavapatas, El Cerro de la Pelota, between
others.
San Agustín, has places of great interest beauty of the natural setting,
as the: Laguna de la Magdalena where born the River of the homeland, Estrecho
del Magdalena, Macizo Colombiano, Laguna de Santiago, Laguna del Buey,
Cañón del Magdalena, Waterfalls and Hills of great archaeologic wealth.
